Home Insurance: Wii Warnings

With the scramble to secure a Nintendo Wii – one of this year’s top Christmas presents – in full swing in the run up to the holiday season, insurance providers are warning policyholders and potential purchasers to be wary of their surroundings while playing.

A recent survey by a leading insurance provider placed the Wii at the top of many people’s Christmas lists, results showed that one-in-five of respondents wanted one for Christmas, with a further one-in-ten respondents planning to buy new televisions.

Ironically, the console’s control system – seen as one of its unique selling points – could prove costly to users who don’t take care whilst playing. Because the control system relies on movement in order to play, the chances of damaging items around the playing area can be high depending on the experience level of the player.

Wii-related damage to property could prove expensive on the player’s home insurance if precautions are not taken.

As reports of damage to televisions as a result of players accidentally letting go of the controller are on the increase, home insurance providers are advising policyholders to check that they are properly covered in case of accidents while playing.

Accidents caused by users taking improper precautions with regards to the movement aspect of the games are on the increase. With plasma screen televisions costing up to £2,000 – any damage caused during play could prove to be costly on their house insurance

By ensuring any high-cost goods are placed away from the playing area, policyholders can help themselves avoid any costly claims.
